Toxic Baby Formula Similac Lawsuit
Babies born prematurely usually need extra care during their first few weeks. This is to make sure that they are properly growing and developing. The breastfeeding campaign seems ubiquitous in our culture. Many people have heard the phrases “breast is best” or “breastfeeding benefits.” However, for babies born prematurely, it can be very dangerous. Most doctors and medical professionals recommend that these babies should be given baby formula products, due to its nutritional benefits. Yet, recent evidence has shown that 2 popular baby formula brands, Enfamil and Similac, aren’t as safe as doctors and medical professionals had believed. A recent study shows that the cow-milk formula products made by Similac and Enfamil may cause a higher chance of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). NEC is a dangerous digestive disease that can be life-threatening for newborn babies.
Sadly, the manufacturer of Enfamil (Mead Johnson & Co) and the manufacturer of Similac (Abbott Laboratories) have not put the risk of this disease on the warning labels of these products. This leads parents to unknowingly purchase and administer a potentially toxic product to their babies.
Herrman & Herrman fights to hold negligent manufacturers responsible for their injustices and strives to make the world a safer place for all. If your child or a loved one’s child has developed health issues as a result of the baby formula administered to them at the hospital or elsewhere, let our attorneys help you. Necrotizing Enterocolitis – What is this Disease?
Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a digestive disease that mostly affects premature babies. When someone is diagnosed with the NEC, it starts to destroy intestinal tissue, where holes then form, leading to increased risk of infections and even sepsis. Babies who have minor cases of NEC may recover from this condition without any long term effects. However, some cases have led to digestive problems in adulthood. In severe cases, the baby will need surgery to repair the damaged tissue. Sadly, these severe cases can also result in death.
Is Similac Dangerous For Children?
Yes. Studies have shown that Similac’s bovine-based baby formula products increased the risk of NEC in premature babies. Shockingly, the correlation between cow-milk based formula and NEC isn’t new. Scientists have warned medical professionals about the risks in the past. In fact, one scientific study showed that babies who rely on baby formula are 6 – 10x more likely to develop NEC vs infants who are breastfed. This is alarming as these products have been recommended by hospitals and medical professionals for many years.
About the Toxic Baby Formula Lawsuit
A lawsuit against the manufacturers of Enfamil and Similac has been brought because of their failure to disclose these risky side effects of their products. Every bottle of Similac’s cow-based baby formula should display the risks associated with their product, of NEC digestive disease, so that parents could make the best choices on what they were feeding their babies. Their negligence has caused babies and infants to lose their lives.
