Does Tylenol Cause ADHD or Autism?
In 2018, researchers performed seven studies involving 132,738 pairs of mothers and children exposed to acetaminophen. Acetaminophen is used by around 50% of pregnant women. This is because acetaminophen is considered the safest for pregnant women and children. The studies showed about 20% of children were at a higher risk for autism because of prolonged exposure to acetaminophen while in the womb. In 2019, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health found that children whose cord blood and autism. Many mothers that were expecting are finding out that acetaminophen is not as safe to take during pregnancy as they thought. These mothers are gathering and have gathered to file a class action lawsuit. samples held the highest levels of acetaminophen, better known as Tylenol, were three times more likely to be diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder later in childhood, compared to children with the lowest levels of acetaminophen. Autism is not the only risk, ADHD can also be from taking Tylenol.
Researchers conducted the same study using cord blood to test the links between acetaminophen and ADHD. Boston Birth Cohort tested blood from 996 children. Those children around the age of 8 to 9 years old had shown an outcome to have ADHD. This study further supports the concerns raised by previous studies that there is a link between Tylenol/acetaminophen use during pregnancy and increased risk for ADHD. Doctors are still researching to get solid evidence of ADHD because the testing shows that there could be a link. This is the same link proven between acetaminophen and autism.
