DONNA, TX – According to Valley Central, officials have released the name of the driver responsible for a fatal crash on FM 493 and Stites Rd on Thursday.
Matthew Ryan Cortez, 26, was fleeing from police in a Nissan Altima on southbound FM 493 when he made a U-turn near Stites Rd and collided with a Saturn ION occupied by four people and a Toyota occupied by one person around 2:45 p.m.
Rescue crews pronounced one person from the ION, Lili Sanlucar Hernandez, 53, dead at the scene of the accident. They transported the other people involved in the crash to an area hospital.
Authorities arrested Cortez once he was released from the hospital. They charged him with evading arrest with a motor vehicle causing serious bodily injuries and murder.
The incident is under investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
